Film Industry (Production): Tom Gordon Brown

Filmmaking, or Film Production is the process of making a film.
There are four main stages in film production:
  • Development
  • Pre Production
  • Production
  • Post production
Development

This is first major stage in production; the stage where the producer finds a story for the film. The ideas may be created originally by the producer or based on books, plays or even other films, however if the ideas for the story are not originally created by the producer, then rights to book/play/film that the ideas are taken from must be bought.
After the rights have been bought, a screenplay must be written. This consists of the producer working with the writers to create a synopsis.
Following the synopsis, they produce a Step Outline. This is where they break down the story into paragraphs, each of which describes a scene.
After the Step Outline, a treatment is created. A treatment is a 25-30 page description of the general themes of the story and the moods and descriptions of the characters, which may be accompanied by drawings to help visualise these aspects of the film.
Over the next few months, the screenwriter will produce a screenplay, or the producer will review many submitted screenplays for other interested parties to assess, after which a final treatment or Film Pitch is reviewed by potential financers in the hope of receiving a 'green light', meaning the film can receive financial backing.
Once a deal has been set, the film can progress into the Pre-Production.

Pre-Production

Pre-Production is the time where every step of the production of the film is planned, to prepare for actually creating the film. This begins with the director visualising the film, usually with the use of storyboards created by illustrators and concept artists.
A production budget is also worked out and insurance is acquired.
After this, the producer must hire a crew to assist him, the size and type of crew hired depends on the budget and nature of the film.
Generally the crew will consist of :
  • A Director
  • A Production Manager
  • An Assistant Director
  • A Casting Director
  • A Location manager
  • A Director of Photography
  • A Director of Audiography
  • A Production Sound Mixer
  • A Sound Designer
  • A Composer
  • A Product Designer
  • An Art Director
  • A Costume Designer
  • A Make Up and Hair Designer
  • A Storyboard Artist
  • A Choreographer

Production

Production is the process of actually creating the film.
The production office will recruit more crew to suit the various responsibilities of the production of the film.
Set construction, lighting and dressing is often set up in advance of filming and the electric and production design crews tend to be a step ahead of the camera and sound departments by preparing the next scene while one scene is being filmed.
After the crew and actors have prepared for filming, the assistant director prepares all the different roles of the filming for each scene while the director oversees the filming process, adjusting everything to his liking.

Post-Production

Once all the filming is complete and the producer is happy with the footage acquired, the film is assembled by the film editor. The shot film material and the sound is edited and pieced together, sound tracks effects are designed and added as well as any computer-graphic visual effects.

Film industry (distribution): youssof mallah

Definition (in film industry):Distribution of a movie in the film industry is the process through which a movie is made available to be watched or consumed by the audience by the distributor.

Distribution in the film making process is the last stage of the procedure there are 5 main ways in which a movie can be distributed the most known ones are:
standard release
simultaneous release
straight to video release
internet release

Standard release: this type of release is the most common type. It is managed by a business model called "release windows" this strategy is used for keeping different instances from conflicting between each other this allows the movie to benefit from different markets such as cinema, home-video, TV, internet etc at different times
the usual way in which standard release works is the film is first released in cinemas then after 3-4 months it is released on DVD for purchase then after a few more months the film is released on pay-TV or video on demand services such as 'Love Film'  or 'Netflix' approximately two years after it was released in the cinema it is then aired onto free to air TV
Simultaneous release: A simultaneous release is when a movie is made available on many forms of media such as cinema the internet VoD and TV all at the same time or with very little difference in timing. This type of release bears some advantages the first is the consumer can choose the medium to view the film which suits their needs and the second is production studios only have to run one marketing campaign for all releases, however a major disadvantage is that such methods are seen as developmental which means they do not receive major investment
Straight to video release: A straight to video release is in other words films that are released on either DVD or Blu-Ray this release takes place when a movie is only released for home entertainment without being released in the cinema.
Internet release: this takes place when a film is released on the internet ready to download or stream by internet users this is the latest type of release, it is quite popular however still in development,

How a movie is given recognition:The ways in which a movie is made popular or given promotion before actual release are; film distributors usually release a film with a launch party, press releases, interviews with the press, posters in public, trailers (on TV,internet) and finally press preview screenings

Film Industry

 Production
 Stages for the production
Development > pre production > production > post production

 Development
In development a project producer finds a story e.g play, book, film or a true story. They then pair with a writer to write a synopsis. A step up line will be developed briefly decided through each paragraphs, dialogue and stage directions to set up the film.

Pre Production
In pre production every step of the film creation is carefully designed and planned. A production office is the administrative office responsible for managing films. A story board is used to create the visual idea's of what camera shots and the effects to what is going on with the creation of the film.
The production of budget is finalized and the production of insurance is organized.

Production
A film crew is to get the story board that is completed and film the shots to high standards, where the actors and directors are involved to film the whole story.

Post Production
Finally the video is edited and it is created with other cuts of the video's to create a whole story. Music tracks are composed along with the voice overs and many more recordings. The lighting and the visual effects of text are usually added in to the video.

 Distributions

Film Distribution is the film that is available to the audiences for them to get easy access to watch the film when it gets released through the use of a film distributor.
There are several ways to do this:

Standard releases
Cinema > DVD > view > Television

Simultaneous Releases
When the film is made available with lots of multiple media's all at the same time rather than a standard release that goes in order.

Straight to video or TV release
This is when it's released from the editing studio straight to DVDs or TV companies to internet.

Film distributors decides to go for a release on one weekend so that they have the time to release the film on multiple media's to raise awareness for more audiences to watch different varieties of multiple media.

 Marketing
Examples of Marketing:
-Trailers
-Internet- films are advertised through social networking such as Twitter, Facebook, Youtube.
-Bus Ads
-Bill boards
- Food packaging
-magazines/news paper
-Radio
-Television
-Devices (Smart phones and laptop)
-Posters
-Text messages
-Friends and Families
-Merchandises
-Competitions
-Promotional tours

Films are sold to different audiences through online renting and monthly paid to watch movies online. DVDs are still around but they do not sell out as much due to the dominance of internet with free online movies to access to.

Exhibitions
Audiences today have free access to internet to watch a film, this enables them to explore more films through devices such as smart phones, laptops and tablets for them to recommend to family and friends from the social networking websites e.g Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The opposition for this to see films is through the cinema, the majority of the audiences are most likely to go see a movie on a weekend due to the fact that the weekdays are working days for the elder audiences. About 41.7% of the population in Britain prefer to watch a film in the cinema on a weekend in comparison to 29.3 % on weekdays. Audiences today prefer to watch a film online, It is free and easier to access online with a much more broader ways to watch varieties of movies at any time whereas for cinema's the price of the tickets may turn the amount of audiences down and the timing for the cinema may be an issue for the audiences to go see the cinema in contrast to online.

In order to engage audiences to watch films through marketing such as trailers to motivate the audience to watch the movies.Marketing gives a visual idea of the movies awareness for the audiences to recognize the films for more audiences to recommend the film to their surroundings. Genre is the key to engaging many audiences, the range of genres such as action, comedy and etc may influence the audiences that are keen to the specific genre's. The actors/ celebrities may also engage the audiences to watch the film, The majority of audiences like to watch many actors for e.g Johny Depp or Robert downey Jr who are most popular due to their charisma, acting skills and the way the media has represent them to influence the audience. The idea of the 'Film value chain' is about the whole creation of the movie through a small chain such as Development > Financing > Pre sales > Production > Sales and Licensing > Distribution > Exploitation. Or the shorter version of the whole process of film chain ( Development > pre production > production > post production).
